Rose – the Queen of Oils

Ask an aromatherapist what the most ‘sought after and difficult to attain’ Essential Oil is and they might say it’s Rose.

Known as the 'Queen of Oils', the benefits of Rose Oil (Rose damascena) are myriad, particularly for women. The flowers from which the oil are extracted are widely considered the most beautiful in the world and have a fascinating history with love and passion.

Roses are naturally enticing with an intoxicating, rich aroma and unrivalled physical beauty. When extracted into an essential oil, they produce multiple benefits for the body and mind as evidenced by their use in aromatherapy for literally thousands of years.

So what does this magical ‘Queen of Oils’ offer us therapeutically today?

Applied topically in daily skin care routines, Rose Pure Essential Oil helps to moisturise the skin and reduce redness. With its strong composition of anti-inflammatory elements, it has been used to combat early signs of premature ageing, reducing imperfections and promoting a more luminous, even skin tone. Regular use may improve peripheral circulation while helping ease muscular aches and pains and the discomfort of varicose veins. Rose has a calming and comforting effect, particularly beneficial to women, providing relief from some menopausal symptoms and can be helpful to bring relief during times of sleeplessness and stress.

Use Rose Oil topically to uplift your spirits; the intoxicating, blooming fragrance is unmistakably romantic and has been used as an aphrodisiac for centuries to promote feelings of love, care, and passion.

How are the flowers harvested?

The careful production of Rose Pure Essential Oil is highly intricate, making it one of the most precious and sought-after oils in the world. As the essential oil yield is highest before the flowers have warmed and opened, the rose petals are harvested by hand just before dawn. Due to the nature of rose petals being extremely delicate, the distillation process must happen the same day that the flower is harvested. It takes more than 10,000 freshly picked rose blossoms to produce only one 5mL bottle of Rose Essential Oil. To really get the picture, it takes around 30 roses to get one single drop of essential oil. Note that Rose is one of a few rare and expensive Pure Essential Oils supplied by LeRêve diluted in pure jojoba oil to ensure affordability. Were it not so, you might have to sell your car to pay for a bottle of undiluted Rose Oil!

Where does this beautiful Rose flower come from?

The origin of the rose remains a mystery. Some historians believe it lies in Damascus, Syria's capital, known as the 'Pearl of the East'. Others believe its botanical roots lie in Persia (now Iran). Fossil records show the rose to be one of the most ancient of flowers (35 million years old) and it could have originated in Central Asia and then spread to the northern hemisphere.

The first rose essential oil was allegedly distilled by a famous Persian physician/philosopher called Avicenna in the 10th century. Since then, for centuries, Bulgaria has been famous for producing the best quality rose essential oil in the world, whereas most of those used for rose absolute are from Morocco.
